PALM Publishing Workshop

3rd and 4th November 2008
UCT Graduate School of Business
V&A Waterfront, Cape Town

The two-day workshop will be both theoretical and practical. The publishing content will focus on copyright, flexible licensing and how publishing might change if flexible licensing were adopted.

The theory and mechanics of flexible licensing regimes will be explained. Examples will be given of new models already in operation elsewhere.

Participants will discuss whether and how such models can be applied in local publishing practices and whether these new 'some rights reserved' approaches are likely to contribute to improved publishing. Print on Demand (POD) will be explored as a potential solution to the distribution of flexibly licensed materials.

Trainers will be drawn from a number of disciplines, including experts in educational technology, intellectual property law, and economists specialising in business modelling.

Researchers will document the discussions on business model development and record the concerns of publishers.

Participants will be encouraged and supported to develop proposals for demonstration projects that test the use of new models in practice. There will be time for participants to engage with and draw on the knowledge and experience of the trainers.
